D’Addario Varigrip Adjustable Hand Exerciser

The D’Addario Varigrip Adjustable Hand Exerciser is a pocket-sized conditioning tool that provides strength, speed building, and maintenance for the entire hand, wrist and forearm. It allows adjustable tension to each spring-loaded piston for an isolated and individual finger workout, helping to develop strength and dexterity in the fingers, hands and forearms.

The Varigrip comes attached to a card; on the reverse side are listed 6 different hand exercises of which I use four.

  • Palm to Tip: Strengthens forearm, wrist and hand muscles. Practicing scale patterns builds speed and dexterity.
  • Fist Grip: Strengthens and increases endurance of entire hand and forearm muscles.
  • Thumb Squeeze: Strengthens thumb area muscles while increasing endurance.

  • Thumb to Tip: Builds individual finger strength along with forearm muscles. Practicing scale patterns builds speed and dexterity.

I purchased the D’Addario Varigrip Adjustable Hand Exerciser just over a month ago and have been using it for just a few minutes a day, twice a day. I am finding this a very good tool to build finger strength and practicing to apply pressure with each individual finger. For me, in the beginning the ring finger and the pinky were the hardest to depress even at the easiest setting, but I have seen improvement since I started using the Varigrip. Sometimes I work the fingers in order and separately 1-4 and 4-1, other times I work the fingers in the fingering pattern for the tune I am presently working on.

The Thumb Squeeze exercise has alleviated some of the pain I have at the base of my thumbs due to Basal Joint Arthritis. This has been a big plus for me. I do all the exercises mentioned above with both hands twice a day.

Since I have seen improvement in my finger strength, dexterity and endurance, I can recommend the D’Addario Varigrip Adjustable Hand Exerciser. It dies what they say as long as I use it as an exercise tool and not a paper weight! It costs, on average, $15 depending on where you buy it. It probably can be picked up in a local music shop if you have one near you, and it is available on many websites. I purchased mine from Amazon.

If you enjoy this website and decide to purchase the Varigrip, please consider using my link to Amazon. Whatever small commission I make goes directly back into maintaining this website. Thank you.
