A Non Fiddle Fiddle Update

Just thought I would write a short update since I have been relatively quiet this past week. So, this is mainly a non fiddle fiddle update with little emphasis on the fiddle.

I’ve been rather laid up since Sunday with what I thought was a sprained ankle. By Monday night, the pain was so intense I thought maybe I had fractured something, and I went to the emergency room. There they were quite uncertain if the problem was a sprain, a joint infection or gout, but they were most concerned with the redness in my skin from the ankle to my knee and diagnosed me with cellulitis (a skin infection) and a sprain.

They sent me home with an antibiotic, Tylenol (I can’t take NSAIDS like Ibuprofen) and wrapped my ankle and told me to rest, ice it and keep it elevated, with the agreement that if I didn’t see an improvement in the skin infection in 24-48 hours, I would return to the ER.

The next day I felt things were getting better until I woke up yesterday (Thursday) with such pain in one of my toes like it was being hit with a hammer and burning. As the day went on, the pain and burning spread to 3 toes, and today four toes. They are throbbing and just to move my foot increases the pain, never mind putting pressure on the foot.

I’ve had time to read up on the subject, and I am convinced from everything I have read on the internet, that I am having an acute gout attack. I do have an appointment this morning with my Doctor. Hopefully, he’ll order some blood tests to see the level of uric acid in my system, the root cause of gout.

So, that’s the non fiddle part of the update. Here comes the fiddle part of the update.

Not really in the mood to write a post the last few days, I have been playing around with my fiddle a lot, although having one leg elevated is not conducive to good fiddle form. It’s hard to sit upright.

I have transposed a couple of more songs into Tabs and posted them in the Fiddle Tune Tabs in the menu at the top of this page.

I was listening to Leonard Cohen the other day, and I love his song Hallelujah, so I have added that. Here is a nice version of it.

Yesterday, I was listening to Katy Adelson’s Tune Collection, and when it got to the Crested Hens Waltz, I thought it was so beautiful, I added that song too. Here is Katy playing it.

Both of these videos are on their respective Fiddle Tune Tabs pages, but I have posted them here for you to listen to in case you don’t get there right now. I have just begun to try and learn these. They are not OT tunes, but I really like both of them.

I have made pretty good progress on the Tennessee Waltz which I added to the Fiddle Tune Tabs section on Monday. Here is a great version of that beautiful waltz.

Oh, I also ordered a Bonmusica shoulder rest. It came in yesterday, and after working to adjust it for the longest while, I took it off and put my old shoulder rest back on. I wasn’t able to get it to feel comfortable on me. Perhaps it is not the right shoulder rest for me. I will play around with it some more before I make a final judgement, and I will be sure to write a review in the near future.

So, that about brings me up to date on my non-fiddle fiddle update. You all have a good day.

Hope the medication kicks in real soon & you’re on the mend ???? I have that shoulder rest & love it! I twisted mine a bit though. Can I share pic with you in this comment section?

Thanks, Katherine. Now that the gout medication has kicked in a bit, I am realizing just how much my sprained ankle hurts. The gout pain was so bad I don’t think the ankle pain was even registering in my head. Also, I think I stressed the ankle even more trying to compensate for the gout pain. I had been putting all the weight on the side of my foot the past few days. Not good for a sprained ankle.

Seems like folks either like or do not like the Bonmusica shoulder rest with little in between.

I don’t see any way to share pics in the comments section here, but pictures and videos can be shared in the Forum on this site: http://fiddlingforolderfolks.com/community/

Thanks, Aywren. I had a 9:00 Dr’s appt. this morning, but when I got to the office someone had screwed up and never entered it. They were so behind and busy already. They told me to take a seat and they would squeeze me in in the next hour or two. I walked out and went back to the ER. They updated the diagnosis to acute gout, ran blood tests to check my kidneys and blood levels, and then prescribed a drug for gout. Can’t wait to feel some comfort. Still hurts like the devil even when I am resting it.

I have been looking at that particular shoulder rest and thought I might like it. Let us know how it turns out. I think it is the one I saw on a Pete Martin video. I hope your foot gets better. Kinda hard to play and tap your foot with the other one elevated all at the same time!

I plan to write a review after I try it a few more times. I wrote a post in the Adult Starters group on Facebook about this shoulder rest, and was quite surprised to find about 40% of people who bought it didn’t like it.

thank you for the videos. Particularly enjoyed the Tenn. Waltz. I am partial to waltzes! I get to thinking I am making progress and then I hear what it is really supposed to sound like and get discouraged! Sometimes I think I should forget learning anything new and just try to enjoy what little I know.

I can relate, but then I listen to a tune a recorded a few months back and see I am getting better….slowly.
